I remember when I received my first and hopefully last DUI. It happened to be the first time I was ever hauled off to the county jail. Let me tell you, that was one of the worst feelings I have ever experienced. I was terrified and my mind kept running through all the worse scenarios that I could think of. Would I lose my job, would I be able to recovery from this and what will I do? Even though I had not had much to drink the breathalyzer at the check point, indicated it was still too much. And I forced into a situation that I knew little about.
I was processed in the mid to late afternoon on a Thursday. I ran through what you would expect, finger prints, mugshots, the whole thing. After hours of this and waiting, I saw a public representative and was given my court date and set bail. The first thing I thought upon seeing the set bail was “I cannot pay that”. After the shock, I was given a phone book with the numbers all nearby Brazoria County Bail Bonds. Now, I have always seen them around local jails and knew that they lend you money to get out of jail. That was about the extent of my knowledge.
So, called up what looked to be the best place and gave them a call. I explained my situation and how I have no idea what I am doing. The Lady laughed and told me I called the right place. She informed me that this was a common occurrence and that she can handle the whole bail process. The first thing she explained was that was in charge of covering about small percentage of the bail. Which is a whole lot better to deal with then before. Also, that this was a loan and that I would be given an interest rate that I would have to pay back. Then came making the payment plan, we talked for several minutes before we came to an agreement. She insisted to know if this was going to cause me any hardships, because it was important to find a solution that worked for me. If not I could face things like repossession if I was unable to pay. Which her nor myself wanted to have to deal with. After, everything was ironed out, I was released a few hours later.
This allowed me to return to work and prepare for my upcoming case. If there hadn’t been a bail bondsmen to help me, I could have had a much more difficult time. Because if you cannot afford bail, you will be sitting in jail waiting for my day in court to come. Though I am still paying off my interest rate on the bail, I would take it over losing my job and possibly a worse sentencing.
I know we don’t like to think about these things. But, it is important to know your options in these times and bail bondsmen can be beckon for those who feel lost in the court system.
